abstract = "The application of landscape ecology index through the use of
Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing enables quickly
and efficiently multitemporal analysis of forest fragmentation,
allowing the generation of essential information for decision
making in developing conservation plans and environmental
recovery. In the municipality of Juiz de Fora, MG fragmentation of
remaining forest is the result of the method of predatory use of
natural resources over time, as a result of the historical process
of occupation and the recent expansion of the urban municipality,
making it necessary to quantify and monitor the progress of
ecological conditions of forest cover. In this context, the
objective of this study is to quantify and monitor the
fragmentation of forest cover in the municipality of Juiz de Fora
in 1987 and 2008 using metrics of Landscape Ecology from the
Landsat TM 5 images classification. The classification of Landsat
images was performed using the maximum likelihood algorithm in
ENVI software, while the calculation of the metrics of the
fragments was performed in ArcGIS GIS, through the tool V-LATE.
The major changes observed in the period indicated a decrease in
the number of fragments and increase in occupied area (-9.22% and
+11% respectively) and increased of the isolation degree (+7.13%),
which can significantly influencing the ecological vulnerability
degree of forest cover.",
